Car Wrecked; Seek Owner
State police today were attempting to learn the identity of a driver of a 1953 sedan which was wrecked when struck by a west bound Nickel Plate freight train at 8:23 p. m. Tuesday at the Traeger road crossing in Union township, 1.8 miles east of Hobart.

The driver, who had gotten out of the stalled car before it was struck by the train, left the scene after talking to trainmen and did not return, State Trooper Gilbert Holt said.

A license check revealed the car was registered in the name of Howard Garriott, RFD 1, Hobart, police said.

Trooper Holt ordered the car impounded at a Valparaiso service station and was awaiting the driver or owner to claim it.

Holt said the car apparently went off the traveled portion of the crossing, the wheels dropping between the tracks.

Crew of the train which stopped included Engineer Leroy Meyer, 36, Fort Wayne, and Conductor Charles Headlee, 33, Grabill, Ind.
