Calumet Heritage Conference Calumet 101, the first annual Calumet Heritage Conference, included a tour of historical, environmental, and cultural sites & sights in portions of the Calumet Region of Indiana and Illinois. Two bus-loads of attendees enjoyed gawking and hearing about Hammond, Calumet City, Burnham, Chicago, Whiting, and East Chicago on the 16th of October, 1999. I did not photographically capture what all we saw and learned about while driving along but here are snapshots from the three stops we made. Our first stop was at the Calumet Park Fieldhouse on Chicago's lakefront, where we visited the East Side Historical Society's James P. Fitzgibbons Memorial Museum. Next stop, Marktown, in East Chicago, Indiana. We roamed the streets and picked up the poop about the homes in this former company town.
Our final stop along the way was at the Gibson Woods Nature Preserve in Hammond. We checked out the nature center and strolled between dunes and across swales.
Then it was back to the conference site and off home, as we pondered how best to make use of our new-found knowledge to help make the Calumet Region an even more super place to be.

Some members of the conference planning committee took a preliminary tour of their own.

The third annual Calumet Heritage Conference was on Saturday, 6 October, 2001. It was held at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana, and, as in previous years, include a bus tour through parts of the Calumet region.
